Description of DJI Zenmuse L3

The DJI Zenmuse L3 sets a whole new standard for the LiDAR world, delivering data equivalent to the highest-performing systems on the market in an incredibly compact format.

It is designed for use on the new Matrice 400, and together they create an incredibly powerful solution for LiDAR measurement.

INCREASED SIZE AND WEIGHT

Although the DJI Zenmuse L3 still has a similar form factor to its predecessors, the L1 and L2, it is significantly larger and more powerful. It now weighs about 1,6 kg and draws up to 100W, which requires a different mount on the drone. Therefore, both the vibration damping and the mechanical and electrical interfaces are different, and you now replace the Skyport with a more powerful type.

ZENMUSE L3 HAS IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE

The increased size and weight are for a reason. The L3 has a much more powerful laser, which draws more power and can now deliver up to 2 million pulses per second, up to 16 returns, and has a practical range of 300-500m.

INCREASED ACCURACY, PRECISION, AND DETAIL

Improved IMU

With greater power and range, increased precision is also required. The L3 is therefore equipped with a significantly better IMU, which allows it to measure

Narrower laser beams - lower beam divergence

One challenge is that each laser beam has a wide footprint when it hits the ground or the objects to be scanned. This has a negative impact on accuracy. A smaller beam divergence helps you partially reach places that may not be accessible with other systems, but perhaps more importantly, you hit a smaller area and thus get a more accurate measurement on each pulse/return.

The Zenmuse L3 has a beam divergence of 0.25 mrad, which is 25% of the Zenmuse L2 (1 mrad).

Accuracy

These improvements generally lead to better results, and the L3 now has an accuracy of 2-4 cm.

DUAL 100MP CAMERAS

To be able to colorize the point cloud, create orthophotos or both traditional 3D meshes and Gaussian Splats, the Zenmuse L3 has been equipped with dual 100MP cameras. Together, they cover a 107° field of view and allow you to collect useful image data at the same time as the LiDAR data.

The cameras are similar to those found in the new Mavic 4 Pro and feature true 100MP quad Bayer sensors that can also be used as 25MP sensors. They have mechanical shutters to provide distortion-free images, optimized for LiDAR coloring and photogrammetry.
