Description of DJI Cellular Dongle
The DJI Cellular Dongle can be installed in a number of drones and remote controllers to enable communication over 4G. Communication takes place via DJI's Enhanced Transmission protocol, which seamlessly takes over when the traditional radio link weakens or is interrupted.
How does it work?
For the DJI Cellular Dongle to work, you must also install a nanoSIM (eSIM does not work). Once you have installed a nanoSIM and mounted the dongle in the device it will be used in, your drone/remote control will have 4G coverage.
For the drone, it doesn't really matter if you don't use Enhanced Transmission, but for the remote controller, it means that it is connected to the internet and can synchronize with your DJI account, download background maps, receive NTRIP corrections, etc.
To use DJI's Enhanced Transmission, you must also have a valid subscription to this service. One year is included when you purchase your dongle, after which you pay an annual fee for this.
Do you need a dongle in both the drone and the remote control?
No, technically it is sufficient to have a dongle in the drone. The remote can be connected to WiFi or a hotspot.
Is it worth it?
If you want to avoid connecting the remote control to WiFi or a hotspot and also want to use Enhanced Transmission, we think this is a good investment. Especially if you fly in environments that are complex for traditional radio signals or if you regularly operate BVLOS.
